From Berlin, Germany, Anne-Beatrice Classmann, prominent German journalist, will discuss the so-called Arab Spring: Where do we see democratic progress? Why did the monarchies succeed in fending off calls for change? Will there be a new war in the Gulf region? And how much influence do Western countries still have in the Arab world? Anne has written two books on the Arab world: The Arab Spring - After One Year (2015) and A Guide Book to Egypt (2007).

Join ES member Donna Lewis as she leads a discussion about young Michelangelo, his life and his early works. We will begin with a Road Scholar Virtual Lecture by Renaissance art historian Elaine Ruffolo. We will explore Michelangelo’s relationship with the Medici Bankers, the period of religious and political crisis under Girolamo Savonarola and Michelangelo‘s contentious relationship with Pope Julius II. After a brief Q&A session and a break, we will follow up with a short Rick Steves video, The Florentine Renaissance. Learn why Florence was ground zero for the Renaissance, with its wealthy patrons and the creative genius exemplified in Michelangelo’s David, Brunelleschi’s cathedral dome, Ghiberti’s baptistery doors, and the Uffizi’s stunning Renaissance paintings. Major General William K. Suter will discuss his tenure as clerk of the Supreme Court. The presentation will briefly describe case selection and decision-making procedures. Major General Suter will emphasize the ideology of the justices and review recent decisions in the areas of freedom of speech and religion, criminal law, separation of powers and federalism. Selected cases set for argument during the Court‘s current term will be analyzed.
