David Vine, Professor of Anthropology at American University, will discuss why the United States has been fighting endless wars for nearly 20 years, since the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. David will show how this warfare is less exceptional than it may seem: the US has waged war or other combat in almost every year since independence. Drawing on historical research and first-hand ethnography in fourteen countries and territories, David will explain how the United States became, as the title of his new book says, a United States of War. David will discuss the catastrophic toll of US wars and offer proposals for how we can end the fighting. Sponsor: Joe Alfred

The First Ladies have long been a source of fascination to the American public, and Elizabeth Kortright Monroe is no exception. As an editor with the Papers of James Monroe, Heidi Stello examines the evidence to draw out a mosaic portrait of this remarkable First Lady. She is one of the most enigmatic presidential partners, in that her entire biography is rooted in her 6 surviving documents, and supplemented by only passing references in the correspondence of others. The documents that do survive portray a woman of fortitude, independence, and intelligence, whose life experiences took her from the New York City elite to the forefront of Virginia politics, the courts of Europe and on to the burgeoning capitol of the early Republic.
