Suzie Kim, UMW Assistant Professor of Art History, will discuss the basic belief system of Choson, its art and architecture.?Topics will include Korean traditional architecture and its five-color decoration, true-view landscape painting (jingyeong san-su), folk paintings, and chaekgeori (scholar’s accoutrements) folding screens. Choson Dynasty (1392-1910), also referred as the Yi dynasty, was the last imperial dynasty of Korea lasting over 500 years. Neo-Confucianism, a combined philosophy of Daoism and Buddhism within the context of Confucianism, became the main principle of the political system, society, and culture.

ElderStudy member Mike Redding will present a travelogue of his visit to Mongolia in May of 2019. He will show the many faces of Mongolia, from the urban capital of Ulannbataar, to the rural countryside where many still live much as they have for generations. He will illustrate the surprising variety of Mongolian geography, ecology and climate. Yes, the Gobi Desert is big, but it‘s not the whole country!

Gary Olsen, movie master, will talk to us about how Alfred Hitchcock, the “Master of Suspense,” set out to make gripping films early in his career, becoming one of England’s and Hollywood’s most sought-after directors during his time. We’ll trace Hitch’s meteoric rise in film from his early cinematic days in the UK through his successes in America. From 1929’s Blackmail to 1948’s Rope, this presentation will show the reasons why Hitch became one of film’s most innovative and respected directors of all-time. Part II, Hitchock‘s later years, will be presented on Thursday, December 3 at 10:00 am.

Danilo Orofino, owner of Orofino‘s restaurant in downtown Fredericksburg, returns to ElderStudy with a cooking lesson to start our preparations for the holidays. Join in with the lesson or just watch the chef at work in the kitchen.
CREAMY ZUCCHINI OREGANO SOUP - Serves 4
2 large zucchini
1 shallot
12 ounces heavy cream
6 ounces whole milk
2 ounces cooking white wine
4 ounces grated Parmesan
2 bay leaves
4 ounces unsalted butter
1 ounce dry oregano
Salt
Pepper
Olive oil
COOKING TOOLS: Medium stock pot; Blender or mixer

Chop the shallot; cut the zucchini in small cubes.
Melt the butter on medium-high heat; add the shallot and bay leaves and sauté for 3-4 minutes.
Add the zucchini and cook for 3-4 minutes.
Add the wine and let simmer for 5 more minutes.
Add the heavy cream and the milk.
Bring to the boiling point then lower to medium-low heat.
Add the Parmesan and the oregano.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
Turn off the heat and let the Parmesan melt.
Blend everything to a smooth cream, being careful not to overfill the blender with hot liquid.
Or use a stick mixer in the pot to blend to a smooth consistency.
Serve in a bowl and finish with olive oil, Parmesan, and black pepper.
