Four of the first five US Presidents resided at and owned large plantations in Virginia; the remnants of these are now major heritage tourism attractions. In 2019 and 2020, Stephen Hanna, UMW Professor of Geography, led a research team of faculty and students from five universities that used “narrative mapping” to document 105 house tours, 36 slavery-themed tours, and the content of self-guided exhibits at Washington’s Mount Vernon, Jefferson’s Monticello, Madison’s Montpelier, and Monroe’s Highland. Professor Hanna will examine the results of this research, providing insight into how the four museums represent the roles slavery played in the lives of these four “founding fathers,” the experiences and perspectives of the people they enslaved, and how these differences affect the ways visitors view slavery within their understanding of the lives of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe.

During her 2019 sabbatical, Carole Garmon, UMW Professor of Ceramics, traveled to remote areas of Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona in search of “Earthworks”. In the late 1960s and ’70s, many artists fled the traditional art market to pursue works that could not be purchased to benefit a gallery owner or museum. Their quest led many of them to the southwestern area of the US. Prof. Garmon will give a brief introduction to Earthworks and document her trip, the amazing Earthworks she saw, and the many people she met along the way.

RESCHEDULED to February 2, 2021 at 1 pm
Jon Malay, author, lecturer and consultant, will discuss two topics.
At 1 pm, he will discuss the sometimes violent Earth. Through advances in marine geophysics in the past century, we know there are “rings of fire” that are the boundaries of the Earth’s crustal plates, and volcanoes bring forth islands from cracks in those plates. He will discuss with us the powerful forces of volcanism, earthquakes and their deadly ocean manifestations – tsunamis.
At 2 pm, Jon will discuss the star we live with and often take for granted. The sun becomes truly extraordinary when revealed in the stunning high resolution animation of solar storms, the interactions between the sun and the Earth and how our planet’s magnetic field, the Van Allen Belts and an ozone layer protect us from too much of a good thing.
